The American Indian Veterans Memorial Initiative (AIVMI) was founded to help build a statue along the Vietnam Walkway near the Vietnam Wall on the National Mall in Washington D.C. that represents an American Indian soldier.
The “Three Servicemen Statue” commissioned by Congress was designed by Fredrick Hart, and dedicated in 1984. This statue represents a “Caucasian, Afro-American, and Hispanic” soldier, but no where is there any American Indian soldier although American Indians have fought in every American war.
In Vietnam, American Indians had the highest per capita of any other ethnic group, but are not recognized at the Vietnam Wall as are three other groups. They also sustained the highest number of casualties per capita.
